After breakfast leave for Thattekkad Birding Camp – located at Kaduvappara (Tiger Rock) on the edge of Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Thattekkad. You will be ferried to Kaduvappara across River Periyar to reach the Camp. Your stay will be in a tree top Machan or in a tent.
At the camp, take a refreshing dip in the secluded lake or just soak in the sun. After lunch go for a birding trek with our Ornithologist or explore the lake in a canoe. You can see at least 10 endemic birds of Southern Western Ghats. Back in the camp by night fall, exchange birding tips, and listen to jungle lores and local myths from our local crew members sitting around a camp fire. Or just star gaze and wish on a shooting star. Or be amazed by the nightscape on a full moon night. Our crew can identify most of the night sounds. And a bewildering variety they can be. Trumpeting of elephants, melodious note of a sloth bear calling out to a mate, growl of a passing leopard, liquid tremulous call of a Jerdon’s Nightjar, ventriloquial call of a flying squirrel or the brain fever bird’s call repeated ad nau-seum on a summer night.
Breakfast at the hotel. Later visit a spice plantation and also visit Kumily village for shopping of spices. Later in the afternoon visit Tribal Village – built inside Mannan settlement, oldest indigenous group of people to inhabit Periyar Tiger Reserve, featuring various types of artifacts related to their ancient agricultural practice, marriage ceremonies, cultural events etc.
Breakfast at the hotel. Later proceed to Pamba Biological Garden, sprawled over the basin of river Pamba at its origin. It is about 50 kms. Away from Periyar and the transportation to there is possible only on sturdy vehicle like Jeep. You can see Elephants, Guar, Samba, Deer, Barking Deer, Lion, Tailed Macque, Nilgiri Thar, The Malabar Hornbills, Sun Birds, Woodpeckers, Kingfishers etc…. Return to the hotel.
